Air filters use a tight mesh of very small fibers to create a screen that only allows very small particles to pass between the mesh of fibers. As small and tightly bonded as these fibers are, making a mesh with small enough openings to capture a virus would be too resistive to comfortably breathe through.  An electrostatically charged filter adds static electricity to the surface of the fibers so that they attract and hold bacteria and viruses on the surface of the fibers and don’t pass through the filter.

It is important that an electrostatic filters stay dry to be effective.  Water will dissipate the charge and make the filter ineffective. If for any reason your filter gets wet, be sure to replace it with a new one.
