It’s February, and everyone knows that this is the month of cards, flowers and… chocolate! That divine delight which can also be the dieter’s most dire enemy. But do not fear! Simple moderation can help you indulge in that chocolaty temptation while staying within your target calorie count! Here are six suggestions to help you safely succumb to your chocolate craving:

  • Choose dark chocolate over milk chocolate – As you glance over your box of assorted chocolates, choose one of the darker varieties. Studies tend to show more nutritional value in dark chocolate over milk chocolate.
  • Add chocolate to nutrient-rich foods – Dip strawberries in chocolate. Add some chocolate chips to a bag of nuts. Stir up some chocolate milk. Make your chocolate touch the highlight of a healthy snack!
  • Order fruit with chocolate – As you order desert, see if there is a fruit option with a small bit of chocolate on the side.
  • Eat smaller portions – You’ll probably eat whatever is on your plate, so as you scoop up your ice cream or cut into that 7 layer chocolate cake, give yourself a smaller serving and then enjoy every bite!
  • Don’t chew, just savor – you will get so much more out of chocolate if you take the time to enjoy it thoroughly.  Close your eyes. Roll it in your mouth. Make it an experience. Rather than eating a thousand M&Ms as you drive down the highway or watch TV, step back and enjoy your moment of indulgence.
  • Give in to your cravings! – Let’s be honest. When you get a craving for a food you are trying to avoid, you often eat everything else trying to feel satisfied, topping it off by giving into the craving you had in the first place. When you are craving chocolate, eat it! Just do it in an organized and controlled manner. In the end you will feel satisfied and more confident in your sense of self-control.

So go ahead, open up that heart-shaped box. No need to be afraid.  And remember – you deserve a little chocolate this Valentine’s day!
